Research Projects
GAPS contains a series of integrated sub-projects that address human security in the Arctic from different angles. Each sub-project addresses different themes of human well-being within the human security framework. Together, these sub-projects together will illustrate the comprehensive nature of human security and the multiple processes that interact to create security or insecurity. Sub-projects will occur in cooperation so as to promote interdisciplinary collaboration in the field, as well as lessen the load of research projects on the communities.
The overall aim of the GAPS project is to identify threats to, and opportunities/adaptative strategies for, human security in the Arctic by assessing the impacts of oil and gas activity in these regions. This aim will be addressed by 6 integrated sub-projects (SP) covering the scopes of environmental, health, political, economic, cultural and social security. All six sub-projects will be linked to international GAPS projects and other IPY initiatives, strengthening international cooperation, facilitating community linkages and networks, and allowing for circumpolar comparison.
